As part of our AR creator spotlight series, we reached out to Josh Garcia with BrandXR! He walked us through the beginnings of the company, a day in the life as a creator, and advice he has for those aspiring to enter the world of AR/VR creation.

How did you get started?

“We got started by following our dreams. There were no Augmented Reality courses back in the day, so we paved our own way to pick up the technology, learn, grow, and build to where we are now. We are thankful for the support and the people we have in our corner pushing us to succeed.”

What does the typical day of a creator look like?

“Daily morning workouts because if you don’t take care of your body your mind won’t be able to function. Then properly caffeinate and jump right into my most creative task for the day. I like to knock out a few hours of deep focused solo work before jumping into meetings. The rest of the day is filled with client meetings, setting the vision and creative direction for AR projects and internal meetings, making sure projects are staying on track and our clients are happy.”

What is your favorite part of the creation process?

“We love the discovery process! At BrandXR we start each project with a Creative Discovery Sprint where we throw any and all ideas at the wall and then pull it back to see where our dreams and the problems our clients are trying to solve meet. This part of the process is full of possibilities and usually, our clients really love this process as well.”

What are some challenges you face during the creation process?

“The biggest challenge in the creative process working in augmented reality is the limitations of current technology. We want to make equitable experiences which means considering lower phone resolutions and smaller screens, slower processor speeds on older devices, and minimal bandwidth are still factors when wanting to create experiences that everyone can enjoy and be inspired by. However, any artist will tell you that art always thrives within limitations…and we always seek to thrive.”

Do you have any advice for anyone looking to get started in AR creation?

“Unity the 3D Engine has great resources to learn AR/VR development, BrandXR’s CEO Moody Mattan was enlisted to give valuable industry insights in Unity’s Pathway on VR Development. This free, six-week course teaches you how to build compelling VR experiences and provides ample opportunity to practice your skills. The Pathway also offers valuable industry insights from established creators. Along the way, you’ll complete eight unique projects, collect XP points, and earn a Pathway badge to display on your LinkedIn profile. It’s the perfect way to dive into VR.”

What are some benefits of being an AR creator?

“Virtual and Augmented reality or extended reality (like our name, the XR in BrandXR stands for extended reality.) These mediums are so incredible to work with because they combine so many digital creation disciplines from graphic design to UX design, from 3D modeling to environmental design, and then bringing it all together using narrative storytelling methods. It’s an incredible medium to truly be an artist on the cutting edge!”
